Imprint of Reionization on the Cosmic Microwave Background Bispectrum

چکیده
We study contributions to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum from non-Gaussianity induced by secondary anisotropies during reionization. Large-scale structure in the reionized epoch both gravitational lenses CMB photons and produces Doppler shifts in their temperature from scattering off electrons in infall. The resulting correlation is potentially observable through the CMB bispectrum. The second-order Ostriker-Vishniac also couples to a variety of linear secondary effects to produce a bispectrum. For the currently favored flat cosmological model with a low matter content and small optical depth in the reionized epoch τ <∼ 0.3, however, these bispectrum contributions are well below the detection threshold of MAP and at or below that of Planck, given their cosmic and noise variance limitations. At the upper end of this range, they can serve as an extra source of noise for measurements with Planck of either primordial nongaussianity or that induced by the correlation of gravitational lensing with the integrated Sachs-Wolfe and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effects. We include a discussion of the general properties of the CMB bispectrum, its configuration dependence for the various effects, and its computation in the Limber approximation and beyond. Cross-correlation studies between CMB temperature anisotropies and 21 cm fluctuations
0556-2821=20 During the transition from a neutral to a fully reionized universe, scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons via free electrons leads to a new anisotropy contribution to the temperature distribution. If the reionization process is inhomogeneous and patchy, the era of reionization is also visible via brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm line emi...
متن کاملThe Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background
We summarize the physical mechanism by which the cosmic microwave background acquires a small degree of polarization. We discuss the imprint left by gravitational waves and the use of polarization as a test of the inflationary paradigm. We discuss some physical processes that affect the cosmic microwave background polarization after recombination, such as gravitational lensing and the reionizat...
متن کاملThe cosmic microwave background: a theorist’s perspective
We review the role of the temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in constraining the cosmological model. We put particular emphasis on the major milestones that have been passed, and CMB constraints on early-universe physics. We also look ahead, surveying what we hope to learn from the next generation of instruments targeting the small-scale...
متن کاملCross-correlation studies with CMB polarization maps
The free-electron population during the reionized epoch rescatters the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! temperature quadrupole and generates a now well-known polarization signal at large angular scales. While this contribution has been detected in the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum measured with Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data, due to the large cosmic variance associat...
متن کاملCross-correlation studies as a probe of reionization physics
The process of reionization is now believed to have proceeded in an orchestrated manner beginning with UV photons emitted by high redshift galaxies containing a large fraction of Population III stars carving out ionised regions around them. The physics during this era can be studied with a combination of redshifted 21-cm spin-flip transition tracing neutral hydrogen gas, IR emission from massiv...
